FAQ

  • Why open another lesbian bar? Aren’t there already queer spaces?

Actually, lesbian bars are extremely rare—not just in Munich, but globally. Many queer spaces today cater to the broader LGBTQ+ community, which is fantastic, but queer women and FLINTA* people (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Nonbinary, Trans, Agender) still often lack a consistent, dedicated space. Most venues only offer one-off queer women’s nights, leaving us without a true home base.

We’re creating a lesbian bar where the community doesn’t have to wait for a monthly event—it’s always there. It’s a space built for us by someone who understands exactly why it’s needed.

  • What even is a lesbian bar?

Great question! Many people, especially outside the U.S., have never experienced a true lesbian bar, so let’s break it down.

A lesbian bar isn’t just a party spot or an occasional queer women’s event. It’s a consistent, welcoming space centered on queer women and FLINTA* folks. Sure, some nights might feel like a party—but it’s equally a place to meet friends, watch women’s sports, gather for community events, or just relax without being a minority in the room.

It’s about belonging. It’s about community. It’s about having a reliable, safe place—not a venue that turns into a queer space only on special nights.

  • Lesbian bars are so rare—how do you know this one will succeed?

It’s true: lesbian bars are few and far between, and many have struggled historically. But I believe the key to making this space successful is building more than just a bar—it’s about creating a dynamic community hub with something happening regularly to keep people engaged.

This bar won’t just be a weekend nightlife spot. It will be alive throughout the week with events designed to bring people through the door—things like public viewings of women’s sports, karaoke nights, trivia nights, dating events, and showcases for queer artists and talent.

It will also serve as a daytime space where you can come in, grab a coffee, use the wifi, meet up with friends, or host your organization’s gathering. The goal is to make it a reliable, welcoming space you can come back to again and again—whether you’re looking for a fun night out or a cozy place to work during the day.

  • I've heard some lesbian bars in the past weren’t inclusive to women of color or trans women. How is yours different?

You’re absolutely right—many traditional lesbian bars had a long history of exclusion, especially toward trans women and women of color. That’s something we need to acknowledge.

As an intersectional feminist, I’m committed to doing better. Our bar is explicitly inclusive of trans women, nonbinary people, women of color, and anyone who identifies within the FLINTA* spectrum. This space is intentionally designed to be safe and welcoming to all marginalized genders and sexualities—without gatekeeping or outdated attitudes. Quite simply, there will be zero tolerance for hate, racism, or transphobia.

  • What does FLINTA* mean, and why use it if many people don’t know the term?

FLINTA* stands for Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Nonbinary, Trans, Agender. It’s a feminist term highlighting those who share experiences of marginalization based on gender—whether assigned female at birth or choosing the female gender later in life.

While it’s true that FLINTA* isn’t widely known internationally—or even among some Germans outside queer spaces—we proudly use it. Munich is an international city, and our bar reflects that diversity. We want this space to be a beacon for Munich’s expansive international community, making it clear that all FLINTA* people, regardless of background, belong here.

  • What’s up with the bar’s name?

Lordy, the name! For me, the name Frau is a feminist statement. It’s simple and direct, but more importantly, it reflects the heart of who this space is for. The term FLINTA* includes anyone who was assigned female at birth or who identifies as female later in life. So when I chose the name Frau, it was with the understanding that it speaks to everyone included under the FLINTA* umbrella. We all know the female experience.

At the same time, I recognize that no single word can capture the full diversity of the community we’re building. I’ve intentionally used FLINTA* throughout the bar’s materials and messaging. I want there to be no doubt that this space is intentionally intersectional, feminist, and inclusive.

It’s important to me that everyone walking by knows exactly what kind of space this is. But more importantly, once you're inside, the name itself fades to the background. What matters most is the welcoming, inclusive environment we’re creating together. It’s the people, the community, and the vibe inside that truly define this space—not just what’s written above the door. I also realize that even after saying all this, some will still dislike the name.

  • How will you keep the space safe?

Safety is a huge priority. On weekends, we’ll have trained door staff (yes, bouncers!) at the entrance—not to create exclusive access, but to manage crowd control and ensure everyone’s safety.

Overcrowding has been a real issue at our existing parties, and it poses risks—not just physically, but in terms of access for the disabled community. We want to avoid situations where the space becomes too full for everyone to move comfortably.

Naturally, door staff may also filter out cis men showing up out of curiosity, but that doesn’t mean you can’t come by with your male friends. A good dose of common sense will always apply. The goal is creating a space that feels secure, welcoming, and accessible for all FLINTA* folks and their trusted friends.

  • How does the crowdfunding campaign work?

Our crowdfunding campaign is all or nothing. That means: if we don’t reach our goal in the first 60 days, your donation is refunded—risk-free. If we’re close but not quite there, the campaign will be extended for an additional 4 months to give us the best shot at success.

  • What will my donation be used for?

Primarily, to secure a lease. Why is that so important? Banks and investors won’t release additional funding unless we have a physical address locked down. Your support helps us clear that first hurdle and proves there’s strong community backing for this project. Once we have a lease, the rest of the financing puzzle starts to fall into place.
